With Jax sleeping peacefully in the center of the bed, they sat on either side of him, watching the rise and fall of his chest.

Still shirtless and tempting, Nicholas shifted to lie on his side and propped up on one forearm. “How did you know what to do tonight?”

“Baby books, fostering and taking care of my niece and nephew. My older brother’s family used to live in Oak Hollow. Now they live in Nashville.”

“My sister, Victoria, doesn’t have any children. My parents have expressed their concern about neither of us having a child to carry on the Weller name.”

“Then won’t they be happy about Jax?”

“You would think so. And hopefully they will be eventually, but Jax arrived in an unacceptable way. In their minds, there should have been an engagement party, a big wedding, and then after the appropriate amount of time, a baby announcement. Everything in its proper order.”

“I see. So, that’s why you didn’t want to ask them for help?”

“That and a few other things.”

“You do know they are going to find out at some point.”

“I’m hoping it’s not until I know what the hell I’m doing.”

She reached across the space between them and squeezed his hand, which rested below his son’s tiny feet. “You’re doing great and getting better every day.”

Turning his hand in hers, he once again laced their fingers. “Without you, I would’ve had to run back home on the very first day.” His smile managed to be both grateful and sexy. “I like being here with you.”

Her nerve endings tingled. “I like it, too.” They moved closer to one another until Jax was cocooned between their bodies, protected and safe. And loved.

“Tell me about your childhood growing up in Oak Hollow. Were you close to your brother?”

“Like your sister, he is a little over five years older than me. So, when I was little, he was my protector. But then I guess I became the pesky little sister who followed him and his friends around.”

“I never really had that opportunity with my sister. Our activities and days were very scheduled and rarely included one another.”

“Guess our childhoods were pretty different.” The baby nuzzled against her in his sleep, and she kissed the top of his head. “Did you go to public school?”

“No. Private. For a while I even went to boarding school.”

“Really?” She pulled up an image of him in a school uniform with a blazer and a tie, and she wanted to see a photo of him as a young boy. “Did you like it?”

“Not at all. Victoria liked it and was there years longer than I was.”

When his foot slid across the bed to brush against hers, she was tempted to sigh. “Your parents let you come home?”

He chuckled softly and put a hand on his son’s little round tummy. “Not by choice. I got kicked out.”

Emma gasped but grinned. “For real? What did you do?” As a teacher she knew all about misbehaving children, and somehow it didn’t surprise her that he’d been that kind of kid.
